Our History

Our team started it’s a journey in 2003 as Team 1204 with the name “The Eagles.” We started building our robots in a classroom at St. Edward High School with nothing more than hand tools, wood, and green and gold spraypaint.  We competed during the 2003’s game of FIRST Stack Attack and the 2004’s game of FIRST Frenzy at the Buckeye Regional. These years are still remembered because the frame of our 2004 robot is still the frame of our T-Shirt cannon as it serves as a reminder of these times. After these years, we took a small break from the FIRST community to obtain a better foundation to build our team.

We returned to FIRST as Team 2172 for the 2007 season FIRST  Rack and Roll and created the name “Street Legal” for the 2008 season FIRST Overdrive. In 2007, our robot was manufactured in a cluttered storeroom and in 2008 it was fabricated in a greenhouse owned by the school. The 2009 season FIRST Lunacy,  was the first year that our team was able to work in the newly constructed Joseph & Helen Lowe Pre-Engineering and Technology Center where we work to this day. This year was also the first year that we competed at two FRC regional events.

We continued to grow throughout the years and in 2011 during the FIRST Logomotion, we opened our team up to students outside St. Edward High School. We welcomed our first female student members who were all from St. Joseph Academy. In 2012 during FIRST Rebound Rumble, our team officially came to represent 3 Catholic Schools in the Cleveland Area with St. Edward High School, St Joseph Academy, and Magnificat High School being the three.

In 2013, we expanded our presence in the community by running both a FIRST and VEX team and going to competitions for both. This was also the year that we

created our Social Media pages which includes: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube

We continued the expansion of our team throughout the years with new students, new mentors, new tools, and especially new Ideas. We took what we have learned and have used it to help other rookie teams throughout our Time in FIRST.

In 2015, during FIRST Stronghold, we fabricated a robot called “George the Dragonslayer” and competed in the Palmetto Regional. We ranked 5th overall and were the 4th alliance captain at the event. We went on and became  state champions and proudly display the banner in our lab

In 2019, during FIRST Destination Deep Space, the Joseph & Helen Lowe Pre-Engineering and Technology Center was expanded and our work area was increased. During this year we also won the Gracious Professionalism award at the Buckeye Regional.

In 2020, during FIRST Infinite Recharge, we renamed our team to “Steel Unit-E” to represent more of what our team was about.

This though is not our Complete history, we are still building and learning from years past and working our way through the new problems that still arise from every new game and event each year.
